When we are young (pre-puberty) we generally have 100% oxygen pressure to the face. That means that the oxygen we breath is able to force through to the facial skin to keep the layers pristine clean and energised; Sebaceous glands are regulated, and on the whole the skin looks and behaves pretty well. However during the tender years of 16 to 24 we loose a massive 30% of this force, and our oxygen pressure in the face is down to 70% by our mid 20's! That means at just 24 your skin is running on a third less energy than previously and is loosing its ability to regulate itself. This massive loss of Oxygen pressure in the skin, is the most significant decrease in oxygen the skin will encounter naturally. It is directly connected to the problems teenagers get with acne and oil production, that many find hard to recover from quickly and problem skin begins. Then we are in danger of worsening the situation ourselves by using products that are simply not suitable or able to treat the condition, but that we "feel " are working, simply because they make the skin feel tight. We suppose that if a product makes the skin feel tighter, or drier it must be controlling the excess sebum and sorting out the problem. WRONG!. Many problems that occur later in life, or prolong acne and problematic skin, can actually be because we have stripped the skin of its natural oils and in doing so encourage the brain to over compensate and produce more sebum.
We then embark on a long journey of trying to control oil production but simultaneously and inadvertently increasing it! You should always treat a problem skin gently and carefully. I think we may even stand alone in recommending an oil based cleanser for such skins. Oils are all different and some oils can break down other oils better than a detergent and are also much softer and gentler and wont tip the balance and dry the skin out. Exfoliation

Scrub is recommended next as a once per day exfoliator

"Can I just breath deeper or hyper ventilate to increase my oxygen levels?"
I am asked this question regularly, and the answer is simple. By doing this you can raise your Oxygen slightly and very very briefly, not long enough to make any difference to the skin! And then if the air you breath is polluted and not the freshest and purest, you could be adding to your bacteria levels. The face receives any surplus Oxygen from normal respiration, last, as the major organs and skin on the body get first dibs. In addition as we age the walls of the capillaries that transfer the oxygen from the blood to the deepest layer of the skin, get thickened with toxins and gunk from what we eat, drink and breath, (sugars, additives pollutants etc). As a result the oxygen gets substantially filtered during transfer and so even less reaches the facial Dermis. Smoke, or suffer from long term stress and you suffer from a double-filtering effect as the openings of the capillaries are restricted further and so the already reduced oxygen, gets filtered again resulting in even less reaching the basal layer, which is where all the work goes on to build ad regenerate the skin.
